Abstract: As essential determining moments rhetoricity and literariness play a central role for philosophy as well in epistemological as in methodological respect. Historically, they shape philosophy as a textual activity from the very beginning. The article discusses the relevance of rhetoricity and literariness for the self-understanding of philosophy and for the philosophical task to communicate knowledge. In this context a concept of knowledge will be proposed, which is not limited to propositional knowledge.
