“She’s a beauty, don’t you think?”

Jim Barton ran his fingers along the bright red fender of the vintage Ford Mustang convertible, nodding in agreement with Ace Jackson, who called out to him from the front porch. Barton had detoured up the driveway to get a closer look at the magnificent car, freshly waxed and gleaming in the Southern California sun. His own current-year Mustang rental car stood parked at the curb at the edge of the yard of this modest bungalow in a nice middle-class neighborhood.
