7.9. Learnings and Implications

Layoff processes have important effects on survivors. Authenticity, congruency, and empathetic communication are primary level 1 interventions. All of us—top executives, middle managers, and individual contributors—erect traps to control and manage the information and emotions that should be spontaneous and free flowing.

In order to be relevant to ourselves and our fellow survivors, we need to go against the grain and resist our tendencies to control and deny. We need the courage to engage in straight talk with ourselves and others.

Dealing with survivors' perceptions of fairness, equity, and caretaking and permitting prior notification and participation in decision making are other important level 1 interventions. ...
