Information technology plays a significant role in improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare. Healthcare IT comes in many forms. This chapter described three types of healthcare IT that are predominantly used in the healthcare system today: healthcare IT utilized by clinicians, hospitals, and other providers to support the delivery of care (ordinarily referred to as electronic health records); methods by which health information is electronically exchanged across the settings where care and services are delivered (often referred to as health information exchange); and electronic tools utilized by consumers and patients to help them manage their health and healthcare.
