Chapter Review

In this chapter, I reviewed many aspects of EHR implementation in a hospital setting. The key features of a successful implementation are clinical workflow and an attention to patient care. IT critically supports but cannot drive the project nor define its success. Governance, design considerations, the catalog and its orderables, the order sets, and clinical decision support must all aim to improve clinical use and strengthen the quality of patient care provided. Implementations should minimize user stress and patient risk and must have a clearly defined structure for handling change control.
