In this chapter you learned that both the inpatient and outpatient healthcare environments present numerous opportunities for the effective delivery of healthcare information. Through the development of healthcare information technology (HIT), including electronic medical records (EMRs), this delivery of healthcare information has been sped up and improved. EMRs are typically capable of real-time reports and views that identify cases of missing and/or inappropriate treatments. Access to this information helps improve the timeliness and accuracy of interventions to correct the problem. This is a real benefit of HIT.
