The Project Life Cycle

Projects vary in both their size and complexity. But, regardless of the size or complexity of a project, all projects follow very similar life-cycle structures.

• Starting the project (initiating phase)

• Organizing and preparing (planning phase)

• Carrying out the project work (executing phase)

• Closing the project (closing phase)

Project phases are an element of a project’s life cycle. PMI describes processes that align with the project life-cycle phases. Monitoring and controlling processes occur at every phase of a project. Figure 37-2 describes the relationship between the phases and processes.
