45. Little chefs

Teaching your child to cook is one of the very best ways to encourage him to adopt healthy eating habits.

So, whatever his age, encourage your child to join you in the kitchen.

Cooking is a wonderful way to teach your child about a huge range of subjects. Encouraging him to taste as he goes will help his powers of description and make him braver about trying new foods. Cooking teaches planning and organisation, kitchen safety and hygiene. All that weighing and measuring can introduce basic mathematical concepts and creating a dish himself will nurture his artistic side too. Older children may even learn something about other cultures and geography as you create, say, an Italian- or Indian-influenced meal.
