We often hear network designers and their management say things like, “We want to build a five 9s network,” or “We want our network to be five 9s.” This terminology is a very loose way of saying, “I want my customers to experience no more than five minutes per year of downtime.” To reach these types of goals, you should predict the availability of your network before you actually build it. Because networks that require these types of goals are complex and often include several layers of redundancy, having a simple way to look at the availability of a complex network is a good idea.
