What, you may ask, has performance got to do with high availability (HA) and its sister discipline, disaster recovery (DR)? Quite a lot. If the system fails and you cannot recover it, that is a serious performance problem. You may be worried if your planned 2 s response time averages out at 5 s, but think, what happens if the response time is measured in days if the system goes down or encounters a disaster?

To cut this discussion short, an installation has to consider the performance aspects of backing up and restoring data in its various forms so that recovery can be effected in minimum time according to the service level agreement (SLA) made with the business users. ...
