Why Discipline?

Performance gurus might argue that their vast experience dispenses with the need for discipline and documents as “I carry it all in my head.” Therein lies the problem. In my book High Availability IT Services, I relate a story from a company that had two first-class database administrators (DBAs). A major outage occurred that was quickly recognized as a database issue. The obvious course of action was to call one of the DBAs. As luck would have it, one was on vacation and the other at a wedding half a continent away.
