Introduction
Some years ago, Thomas Schwinn (2013) reminded us of the current lack of exchange between sociological differentiation theory and the sociology of religion. Historically, the latter was often – explicitly or implicitly – based on differentiation-theoretical assumptions, and some outstanding theorists of social differentiation, such as Max Weber, Niklas Luhmann or Pierre Bourdieu, took religion as one of their prime examples.
