This book has been a long time coming, and we are both relieved to have finished it. As usual, there are many people who deserve our gratitude. First of all, there is the, perhaps surprisingly, large and growing number of scholars who have been taking history seriously in their research—knowingly and at times unknowingly. They have provided all the raw material for our work.
