BRENÉ BROWN, in her wonderful book Braving the Wilderness, discusses the scientific findings behind the psychological need in human beings to demonize the “other.” It’s hard to hate anybody up close so she suggests you move in.1 The Jewish commentator Dennis Prager asks why the Bible says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Why doesn’t it say, “Love all of mankind”? He points out that to love all of mankind is easy. Loving the jerk next door is hard.2
