The following profiles are taken from U.S. Department of State reports on terrorist organizations and state sponsors, augmented by other sources. The Department of State officially designates groups as foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs) in a process that involves various federal agencies and the U.S. Congress (and even provides for input by the groups themselves).
