Acknowledgments

I FEEL PRIVILEGED TO have collaborated on this book with one of the true legends of social change, Bill Novelli. Many people know Bill from his leadership roles at AARP and CARE or his co-founding of Porter- Novelli, the pioneering social marketing firm, or his current work as a professor of the practice at Georgetown University. But his contributions as co-founding president of Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids have most inspired me. I’ve had the privilege of learning at the feet of an advocacy and social marketing master, both through working with Bill on this book and as executive director of the Global Social Enterprise Initiative, which he launched with a group of students at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business in 2011. Bill, your generosity of thought, time, ideas, and spirit inspire me every day.

I also am deeply grateful to Ladan Manteghi, GSEI’s founding executive director. Ladan brought me in the GSEI fold and believed so strongly this book needed to happen that she created a research fellowship to enable me to come to Georgetown and work on it full-time. She even graciously opened her office so I’d have a quiet place to write. (Luckily, we found an extra office elsewhere at the business school so we could maintain both our friendship and colleagueship.)

This book has benefitted from the camaraderie of the incredible team Ladan and Bill have built here at Georgetown. My deep respect and gratitude go to our special project leaders, including AgingWell ...
