Why Traditional Goal-Setting Keeps You Broke

Every year in January, gyms and health clubs are packed with determined people that have the good intention to go for their goals and New Year's resolutions. Everyone stands in line waiting to use the equipment, and the work-out classes are fully booked. The exercisers in the gym trying to achieve their goals and resolutions all have very determined looks on their faces. But by March, 95 percent or more of those originally determined people have given up. What happened to their determination? Why did they quit? How does their quitting affect future goals they may set? When people give up, it creates a mental and emotional anchor for the expectation and acceptance of failure. Traditional goal-setting sounds good in theory, and makes you feel good momentarily; but it does not get the job done. To accomplish your goals, you must understand your patterns and take intelligent, quantifiable action.

Goal-setting, as you've known it until now, involves a declaration of desire. Unfortunately, this desire is usually stated in a way that reinforces the negative. Traditional goal-setting can also limit your view of what you really want. Some examples are: "I want to get out of debt," "I want to pay my bills," "increase sales," "make more money," "be the top salesperson," "stop smoking," and "begin exercising."
