We have different personalities, different childhoods, different genders, different assumptions, different expectations, different experiences and different careers. It’s hardly surprising we also have different parenting styles.
In harmonious relationships, parents accept and talk about differences; parenting styles become complementary and converge. When parents don’t communicate effectively, or fall out, the opposite happens: parenting styles diverge and become polarised. We’ve noticed the stricter parent becoming even stricter in response to a more permissive co-parent.
