Teenagers are often insecure, uncertain and uncomfortable in their own changing bodies.

It is perhaps not surprising that many of them develop an unhealthy body image, and this can lead in some cases to eating disorders.

Teenagers, like all of us, are bombarded daily with media images of stick thin models with perfect skin and hair. Magazines, TV programmes and newspapers give off one message – thin is in. Teenagers are more likely to feel insecure and crave the ‘ideal’ appearance than older adults. Explain to your teen that the average girl or boy does not look like a model – in fact, the models in magazines are not as ‘perfect’ as they look; they are airbrushed into ‘perfection’.
