Why Do Most Career Books Suck?

Most books about careers, networking, and especially “personal branding” suck.

The advice tends to come from two types of people: box-checkers and hacks.

Box-checkers peddle the same old advice you’ve heard for years since your high school guidance counselors. They write books on “the next big career trends” and guides on rewriting your résumé.

Most of these people haven’t had to find a job since before the Great Recession. Some simply republish the same old advice that worked in the 80s and 90s. Or maybe it’s recycled advice that worked for them personally. No matter the case, it’s likely they haven’t actually had to help real people with their careers in years.
