THERE ARE SEVERAL different ways of getting exposure to gold. We need, however, to distinguish between holding physical gold on the one hand, and a right to a specific amount of gold or an economic exposure to its price on the other. Those with an apocalyptic view of life will insist on holding gold in physical form in a place where they can get easy access to it. If what an investor wants is simply a convenient, hassle-free way of holding it, and the right to claim a specific physical amount of gold stored at a trusted institution, then there are other alternatives. And if all the investor wants is an economic exposure with no physical complications, then there are yet more alternatives that can be pursued.
