Most collaborative processes involve face-to-face meetings, and the effectiveness of those meetings is critical to the success of the collaborative effort. The effectiveness of any single meeting is largely dependent on how well process issues are handled—issues such as developing an agenda, deciding which heuristic problem-solving strategy to use when, ensuring that everyone has a chance to speak, handling conflicts among participants, and so forth. The best way to deal with these process issues is through the use of a dedicated, neutral process guide called a facilitator.
