Chapter 10 Competency-based interviews

You may well be told to expect an assessment using competency-based interviewing. Or you may find the interviewer employing this style of interview without describing it to you as such; it may be incorporated into the standard interview.

So what does it mean? Well, it’s an interview technique for assessing ‘competencies’ or behavioural skills which are central to the job you’re applying for. In other words, it examines your abilities rather than your technical skills. The interviewer will use this method to judge, in depth, competencies such as:

  • teamwork
  • planning ability
  • coping with change
  • self-motivation
  • presentation skills
  • customer service ...
