4. Other Approaches to Investing

In addition to value investing, there are two other broad approaches to investing. One is technical analysis, and the other comprises of a variety of methods which I categorise as event-based investing. I will summarise each approach and explain why I prefer effective value investing for optimising long-term investment returns.

1. Technical analysis

The techniques which are used to value an individual share or to value the market all use financial and economic data. Some of the data is factual and some is projected but all the data is used mathematically to measure the intrinsic value of a share and hence, by implication, to predict the likely future movement of market prices.
