18. Establishing Your Investment Objectives

Before you start value investing you must determine what your investment objectives are.

Overall target objective

As with any other objective in life, you are far more likely to achieve your investing objective if you define it clearly and establish a target timescale.

As I have previously emphasised, the financial dimension to any investment objective must be expressed in real terms. So any financial objectives must be revised each year in line with inflation (preferably your personal inflation rate). Sample objectives might be:

  • I want to retire at age 60 and build up a fund from which I can draw a pension of £20,000 p.a.
