Heterogeneous networks

Abstract

The cellular radio concept of a grid of wide area base station sites planned to provide a reasonable level of coverage has existed since the first generation of mobile radio systems. In the mobile broadband era, expectation levels have arisen of a ubiquitous provision of high-speed services at low cost. At the same time, emerging technologies have enabled a new generation of low-power base stations. To cost-effectively meet demand and expectations for mobile broadband, operators are increasingly turning to more complex network deployment solutions that consist of a mixture of traditional macro base stations, small low-power base stations, and base stations of intermediate size.
