A bifurcation may be as simple as a critical point, like the ones in the
logistic map model, or it may be a continuous pattern of instability as found
in the catastrophe models. Critical- point bifurcations appear to be inherent
in the onset of cognitive automaticity (Chapter 7), or in the speed– accuracy
trade- o (Chapter 8). There are also more complicated types that have been
useful for explaining sudden movement across discrete system states; this
type is explained further below in connection to catastrophe models.
