The upper right portion of Figure 5.5 depicts the principle of proximity.
There are two rows, each of which contains six vertical lines. The relative
proximity of the lines leads the viewer to perceive two groups of three lines
in one case, and three groups of two lines in the other.
The principle of good continuation is analogous to a road map. If we
were driving from Point A to Point O and wanted to continue on the same
path, would we end up heading to Point B, C, or D? Most people would
head toward B, as it makes the smoothest continuation from A.
