Abstract
Building design, and in particular control room design, presents complex challenges for achieving effective human performance. There may be fewer challenges for “new builds” as opposed to building or control room “upgrades,” but in both cases design constraints and trade-offs often need to be navigated. The operational space needs to support the functionality required of different roles for different operational scenarios; such as steady-state, plant upset, planned start-ups/shutdowns, and emergency response.
