Human factors in the design of procedures

Abstract

This chapter presents key principles for the design of usable procedures. The important role that procedures play in preventing major accident events is discussed, along with reasons for why they often fail in organizations. Where procedures fit within the broader safety management system is addressed. Different formats for procedures are explained, including step-by-step procedures, which are the focus of the chapter.
