Abstract
This chapter discusses how the safety aspects of staffing the operation can be addressed. Staffing is concerned with having the optimal number and type of people to perform tasks and activities in all operational scenarios. Workload assessment is used to ensure that staff meet the performance requirements safely. Training ensures that staff have the required skills, knowledge, experience, and attitudes for consistently maintaining performance standards. Structured techniques are discussed for enabling individuals and teams to acquire, use, and maintain competence, particularly in relation to safety critical aspects of the work.
