I was in a new central control room of a refinery that had large monitors for an overview display at each console. “I can’t read what’s on there, can you?” I asked several of the company personnel standing with me. It wasn’t that I didn’t understand what was on the screen; the contrast was so poor that I couldn’t even make out what was written (white cow in a snowstorm effect). They all replied that they couldn’t read it either. “Don’t you think you should be able to read it?” I challenged them. “Oh, that’s what the human factors experts say it should be like” was the response.
