In 1992, an oil company requested us to develop a display standard. The company needed us to create displays in a novel way for its distributed control system. We asked the company’s personnel as to how they currently would go about it. They said, “We lay out the piping and instrumentation drawings. Using an 8.5 × 11” sheet of paper, we sketch rectangles on all the drawings until all of the instrumentation has been captured.” They then sent the drawings to be configured with a display to match each rectangle.
