The Teacher Development Agency (TDA) now operates with a greatly diminished role, and the
current move is to shift the locus for training teachers onto schools, which will have inuence over
the way in which they work with HEIs rather than HEIs being able to select the schools they work
with. Trainees are likely to be required to spend an even greater proportion of their time in schools.
STRUCTURES FOR TRAINING TEACHERS
It is useful to note that there are three main ways of training to teach in the UK: One is an under-
graduate degree currently (often lasting four years but being slimmed to three as a result of fees
