Historical overview: cities from medieval to modern times—what went wrong

Abstract

This chapter recaps the history of the city from medieval times to the remodeling of Paris (the period when it was done right) and then from the industrial revolution through today (when it all went wrong, from bad to ugly). The first period, called here the good describes the territorial expansion inland in Europe in Medieval times, when villages were set up away from rivers and seas. In that time, the human daily functions of “live, work, and play” were basically conducted in the same location. Then the chapter focuses on Paris and its re-urbanization in 1860, a symbol of the last European cities to be planned in this period before the industrial revolution. ...
