Vertical scaling happens when additional specifications are added to the individual resource, such as upgrading a server with a more powerful CPU or larger memory. OpenStack and AWS both allow resizing a virtual machine instance by stopping it and editing its properties. After a certain level, vertical scaling can reach a set limit and may not be a very cost-effective and efficient approach.
