When a raw hardware system needs to be provisioned by deploying an operating system over it along with optional software installations and configurations, this process is called bare metal provisioning. OpenStack Ironic is a bare metal provisioning service. It consists of a bare metal hypervisor API and a collection of plugins that can interact with the bare metal hypervisor. Typically, a bare metal provisioning process involves the standard IPMI protocol along with PXE. These protocols are also used as default by the Ironic service. However, it also supports various vendor-specific plugins that can be used to implement more vendor-specific features and functionalities.
