Heat – OpenStack Orchestration Service

The OpenStack Orchestration Service is code named Heat. It provides a template engine that executes templates to create and manage OpenStack cloud resources such as virtual machines, volumes, networks, and so on. A template creates resources one by one in the order specified, thus forming a stack of resources. The template is written in the YAML format and is called the Heat Orchestration Template (HOT).

The OpenStack Heat service is comprised of the following:

  • openstack-heat-api: Provides a REST API to consume Heat orchestration services
  • openstack-heat-api-cfn: Provides an AWS query API that is compatible with AWS Cloud Formation that processes API requests by sending the request to Heat
