EC2 instance security groups

A security group is a firewall that is associated to one or more EC2 instances running on the AWS Cloud. It defines a set of rules that determine how network traffic flows to and from the instance.  

Security groups provide the ability to set customized firewall rules based on the protocol, port, or IP address.

The following are the characteristics of security group rules:

  • The default security group allows all outbound network traffic
  • The security group rules for outbound traffic of the instance launched under the EC2-Classic platform are fixed and cannot be modified
  • If an instance is associated with more than one security group, all the rules are combined and applied to the instance
