14.14.4 Recovery - Place controller
You can use the Advanced Recovery Place controller submenu functions to set the
selected controller state to online, offline, or service mode. In this section we describe how to
use these options.
Place controller online
Placing a controller online sets it to Optimal status and places it in an active mode, available
for I/O operations. Under normal operating conditions, both controllers will be online and in
the optimal state. This function is only used if one of the two controllers is in either the offline
state, or in service mode.
Perform the following steps to use this option:
1. Select the controller in the Physical tab of the DS Storage Manager (Subsystem
Management) window and then click Advanced Recovery Place controller
Online as shown in Figure 14-132 on page 419.
Note: These three functions should normally only be used under the guidance of your IBM
technical support representative.

Place controller Offline
Placing a controller offline makes it unavailable for I/O operations and moves its arrays to the
other controller if failover protection is enabled.

Place controller in service mode
You can use the place controller in Service Mode option to safely run controller diagnostics
without affecting data availability. These conditions apply when you use Service mode:
򐂰 When you place a controller into Service mode, all of the logical drives are forced to the
active controller. This mode provides for continuous data access through the active
controller. The preferred logical drive owner does not change. When the controller is
removed from Service mode, the logical drives are redistributed back to their preferred
owner.
򐂰 You can place a controller into Service mode only if two controllers are in the storage
subsystem and they are both active.
򐂰 Service mode is a persistent state. If a controller is reset, goes through a power failure, or
is removed and reinstalled, the controller remains in Service mode.
򐂰 You cannot make a controller that is in Service mode the owner of any logical drive.
Use the following procedure to set the controller in or out of service mode:
1. Select the controller in the Physical tab of the DS Storage Manager (Subsystem
Management) window and then click Advanced Recovery Place controller In
Service Mode as shown in Figure 14-136.

2. The window shown in Figure 14-137 on page 422 will be displayed. Read the information
and then click the Yes button to confirm that you want to place the controller in service
mode.
