5.1.3 Backup for large departments and enterprises

This solution provides dynamic tape sharing for up to 28 heterogeneous servers for fast,

reliable, cost-effective backup, archive, and restore with up to 248 TB capacity.

Description

The IBM 3584 UltraScalable tape library provides low-cost, industry standard and certified

LTO storage for backup, restore, and archive. LTO is a significant breakthrough in open tape

storage, providing enterprise-level reliability, performance, and capacity with up to 24 tape

drives and up to 66.7 TB uncompressed capacity in this dual-frame configuration. However,

you should note that the maximum configuration for a 3584 is six frames, holding up to 72

drives, with a maximum of 248 TB uncompressed capacity.

Figure 5-3 shows the configuration with HVD SCSI drives connected through the IBM

2108-G07 SAN Data Gateway.

Figure 5-4 shows the same configuration with direct Fibre Channel attached tape drives.

Notice that the two gateways are replaced by a switch. The reason for the switch-to-switch

cascading is simply to have enough ports to connect 28 servers and 12 tape drives.

In addition to the hardware configuration, Tivoli Storage Manager (or other industry

recognized storage software) provides highly-automated, centrally scheduled,

policy-managed backup and archive facilities to protect data in distributed environments.
