Chapter 5. WebSphere Application Server Architecture

WebSphere Application Server (WAS) V5 is a J2EE 1.3 (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) compliant runtime. This chapter covers the runtime architecture of WebSphere Application Server V5 (also referred to as WAS base), which is a single JVM (process) runtime. The discussion will include an introduction to the WAS runtime architecture, application and administrative clients, and the WAS implementation of various J2EE services such as JNDI (Java Naming and Directory Interface), Java classloaders, and other essential services. (We will discuss the WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V5 in a later chapter.)
