Music, dance, theater, performance, and fine arts in the former industrial buildings of the Ruhr Area—that’s the Ruhrtriennale.
A new artistic director takes the helm of the festival every three years. In our case, Dutch director Johan Simons headed the events. His main focus, in which he has a lot of experience, was getting audiences to see things that were otherwise difficult to see. For example, he has tried many ways throughout his career to make opera more accessible and to bring it to a wider audience. Johan’s approach here was also about accessibility.
