Confocal Microscopy in the Ocular Surface
Sze-Yee Lee, Andrea Petznick, Shakil Rehman, and Louis Tong
18.1 Introduction
Optical microscopy is a vital tool in life science investigations with the aim of imaging at
subcellular resolution. Confocal microscopy is used for obtaining three-dimensional (3-D)
images of thick objects (Wilson 1990; Pawley 1995; Masters 1996). This is possible by what
is known as the optical sectioning property of the confocal microscope, in which images
of very thin sections of an object can be obtained and a 3D image can be produced by
properly arranging these slices.
