Identication of Acanthamoeba keratitis using IVCM was rst described in 1992 and was
suggested to be used as a tool for rapid and successful diagnosis (Chew et al. 1992). The
characteristic round structure of the Acanthamoeba cysts (its inactive form) and hyperre-
ective trophozoites (its active form) are easily recognized in IVCM images (Guthoff et al.
2009; Kumar et al. 2010).
