6Image Coding

Image coding comprises a group of image processing techniques, and is also called image compression. Image coding addresses the problem of reducing the amount of data required to represent an image.

The sections of this chapter are arranged as folglows:

Section 6.1 introduces some basic concepts and terms concerning image coding, such as data redundancy, image quality, and judgment.

Section 6.2 describes several commonly used variable length coding methods to reduce coding redundancy, including Huffman coding and its simplified versions, Shannon-Farnes coding, and Arithmetic coding.
