Each equation has a particular meaning. Equation (6.36) indicates that the reconstruction levels are the centroids of the areas under p(s) over the specified decision intervals. Equation (6.37) indicates that the decision levels are halfway between the reconstruction levels. For any L, the si and ti satisfy eqs. (6.36)– (6.38) and are optimal in the mean-square error sense; the corresponding quantizer is called an L-level Lloyd-Max quantizer.
