aged patients had fared worst and died more than the old and
the very young [33]. They were able to explain this fl uke when
they found that many of the middle group had been infected by
a cross-reacting strain about ten years before; a case of antigenic
sin at its worst and saddest. The young were able to mount
an effective primary response, while the elder patients had
survived a previous H1N1 epidemic, thirty years earlier. This
is an unexpected, welcome validation of IMMSIM's prediction.
Moreover, it shows that MaN can become a serious threat.
