Everybody looks forward to company events. There's the excitement of experiencing a nice venue, hanging out with co-workers in a relaxed atmosphere, making new acquaintances, and being enticed by the food spread. They are an opportunity for leadership to show appreciation for the hard work of staff, enhance company culture, and build relationships. So, why not bring people together and connect for a “Wine Down Wednesday,” or “Yoga in the Park” or celebrate a new product launch or the holiday season? The intent is for everyone to have a good time.

In practice, however, not everyone gets to have an enjoyable experience. The thought of attending a company event may secretly spark dread for some employees. And, no wonder, often events are not designed with them in mind. Diverse groups have diverse needs. Organizations that host the same type of events year after year without regard to changing employee demographics and lifestyles are missing an opportunity to demonstrate that they value diversity. Planners must be mindful and work to ensure that gatherings are respectful, welcoming, and open to everybody.
