The more I learn about the impact of “ships” in the creation of more equitable and inclusive workplaces and society as a whole, the more excited I become by the magnitude of change we can produce. When we roll up our sleeves and embark upon a journey of mentorship, sponsorship, relationship, or allyship, we can improve lives and change systems. Look at the advancements we've made in societal dysfunctions ultimately affecting the workplace:

  • The Marriage Equality Act resulted in more inclusive benefits for the LGBTQ community.
  • Pay equity legislation prompted more employers to implement fair pay policies.
  • The American with Disabilities Act requires employers with 15 or more employees to provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities creating equal opportunity for employment.
  • Affirmative Action aims toward anti-discrimination and equal opportunities for historically excluded groups when making college admission and employment decisions.

We've come a long way, and we have a very long way to go. Ships create opportunity to connect with causes and individuals we care about and can empower us to be the change we want and need to see either on the front lines or behind the scenes. ...
